Ontario High School Literacy

Comparing ways to meet Ontario high school literacy requirements: look at testing and course options.

For graduation requirements in Ontario, there are a number of requirements that must be met. Students must successfully fulfill the Ontario Secondary School Literacy requirement in addition to earning 30 credits and performing 40 hours of community service.

Recognizing the requirement for Literacy

This requirement assesses whether or not pupils meet the minimum literacy requirements for all topics up until the end of the ninth grade. It confirms a student’s English language competency, which is essential for completing high school coursework and beyond.

Fulfilling the Requirement

The Literacy requirement can be satisfied in two ways. The Ontario Literacy Course (OLC4O or OSSLC) is an option for students, or they can choose to take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).

The Literacy Test is required for both select remote learners and students enrolled in traditional Ontario high schools. This year’s exam is administered in two sessions, from November 1 through November 30 and March 20 through April 24. Schools will notify students of the precise day and hour of the online exam.

You may get more information about the test on the Ministry of Ontario website.

In the event that they are distant learners or fail the literacy exam, students can still finish the course. To fulfill the Ontario Literacy requirement for graduation, CanSTEM Education Private School students can enroll in the OLC4O course.

The Ontario Literacy Course (OLC4O or OSSLC)

The OLC4O course functions similarly to other CanSTEM Education courses. Students can enroll for a minimum of four weeks after signing up, and they have up to one year to complete the course. Notably, this course satisfies both the literacy requirement and qualifies as an elective credit toward the OSSD.

Students study fundamental reading skills that are necessary for daily, professional, and academic endeavors throughout the course. Unit tests, portfolio requirements, log reading, and a final exam must all be completed.Students who complete the course satisfactorily meet the Ontario Literacy requirement and are eligible to graduate.

All students must address the Ontario Literacy requirement, whether through test completion or course participation. Keeping up with the particular criteria is therefore essential.
