Cheating and Plagiarism
“Learning is enhanced when students think independently and honestly.” At CanSTEM Education Private School, we expect students to respect the intellectual property of others and maintain honesty in all course activities. Assignments and exams must reflect a student’s own work. Cheating and plagiarism are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
What is Plagiarism?
At CanSTEM Education Private School, plagiarism means:
- Using someone else’s ideas or thoughts without proper acknowledgment.
- Quoting directly or paraphrasing someone’s work without crediting them.
- Submitting an assignment written entirely or partly by someone else as your own.
- Presenting material obtained from online sources, even with minor edits, as your original work.
What is Cheating?
Cheating includes:
- Buying or selling assignments or exam questions.
- Submitting the same work for more than one course without permission.
- Having someone else prepare your assignment.
- Letting others copy your work or sharing your assignment.
- Providing or receiving unauthorized help during exams or tests.
Why Academic Integrity Matters
Academic dishonesty undermines learning and the integrity of our school. Students who cheat or plagiarize will:
- Receive a mark of zero for the assignment or exam.
- Face additional consequences depending on the situation.
Consequences for Academic Dishonesty
Consequences are determined based on:
- The student’s grade level.
- The student’s maturity.
- The number and frequency of incidents.
- The individual circumstances of the student.
Each case will be addressed individually. In all instances, records will be kept in the Ontario Student Record (OSR), including a letter to inform parents about the incident and its resolution.
Plagiarism Policy-2022-2023
At CanSTEM Education Private School, honesty is essential. The Ministry defines plagiarism as using someone else’s language or ideas without proper attribution to present them as your original work.
Preventing Cheating and Plagiarism
To prevent cheating and plagiarism, our school:
- Communicates the importance of academic honesty to parents and students.
- Provides clear guidelines on acceptable practices.
- Uses tools and methods to detect plagiarism and cheating.
Responding to Academic Dishonesty
When students plagiarize or cheat:
- They fail to provide evidence of their learning.
- Teachers and the principal will choose appropriate responses, considering mitigating factors.
Mitigating Factors
The response depends on:
- The student’s grade level.
- The student’s maturity.
- The number and frequency of incidents.
- The student’s individual circumstances.
If necessary, students will be given another chance to demonstrate their learning through a similar evaluation. However, a zero may still be assigned based on the situation.
All incidents of academic dishonesty are documented in the OSR. A copy of the resolution letter will also be shared with parents.
