How PTE Core scores compare with the CLB

If you take PTE Core for a Canadian visa application, you will be asked for a Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) level for one or more of your language skills. This is the standard used to describe, measure and recognize the language ability of adult immigrants and prospective immigrants who plan to live and work in Canada. Remember to check the IRCC website for official requirements before taking your test.

Can I retake my test?

If you didn’t get the desired score you need, you can book to take another test in 14 days from the time you have received the scores from your last test. You can retake the test anytime within the same month.

Are there multiple sessions in a test?

No, computer-based testing means you only need to attend a single two-hour test, instead of two separate sessions.

How long does the PTE test take?

PTE Academic lasts approximately 3 hours, with the following sections:

— Speaking & Writing: 77–93 minutes

— Reading: 32–41 minutes

— Listening: 45–57 minutes

Is the PTE test computer-based?

Yes, the PTE Academic is completely computer-based, and the speaking section is recorded via a microphone.

How long are my PTE test results valid?

PTE test results are valid for 2 years.

How is the PTE different from other English proficiency tests (like IELTS or TOEFL)?

PTE is fully computer-based, making it faster and more efficient. The speaking section is recorded and scored by AI, which may result in a more objective assessment. PTE also offers faster results (within 5 business days).

What is the difference between the test content of PTE Academic and PTE Core?

The difference between the two tests is that PTE Core focuses entirely on testing your English skills in everyday situations, whereas PTE Academic focuses on academic settings.

For example, in PTE Core, you may be asked to read a magazine article or write an email. You will not be asked to consider lecture materials or academic articles.

Otherwise, the two tests share many of the same features. Like PTE Academic, PTE Core is a two-hour test taken at a test center, and it covers the four skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing.

Do I still need to take PTE Academic to study in Canada?

Yes. PTE Academic is still the only PTE test that is suitable for studying in Canada.

Which test providers offer English Language Tests for the Citizenship exam?

In Canada, the following are the authorized test providers for English language assessments used for citizenship applications:

How are PTE Core tests scored?

All PTE tests are scored using our advanced automated technology, trusted by governments and institutions worldwide. By combining AI scoring with human expertise, we minimize bias to ensure fast, fair, and accurate results.

Our automated system is specifically designed to assess integrated skills, allowing us to accurately measure your ability to communicate effectively in real-world written and spoken English.

The PTE Core test is scored on a scale of 10 to 90, with 90 being the highest possible score. Test takers receive a personalized Score Report, which includes their overall test score along with a detailed breakdown of the four key English skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

For a comprehensive understanding of our scoring process, download the PTE Core Score Guide from the PTE Core scoring page.

What PTE Core score do I need?

The PTE Core test has a score range of between 10 and 90, with 90 being the maximum score. Test Takers will receive a personalized Score Report that shows the overall test score plus the score breakdown for each of the four English skills (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking).

The score you will need for your visa will depend on the type of visa you apply for; you can find this score requirement on the Canadian Government website. Your application may require a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score.

What PTE Core score do I need for my Canadian visa application?

The scores required for your Canadian visa application will depend on the type of visa you apply for. You will typically need to provide a Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) level for one or more skills. You can use the PTE Core to CLB conversion table (PDF, 49.3kb) to determine your PTE score requirements.

Please note that IRCC only requires individual skill scores—your overall PTE score will not be required and cannot be converted into CLB.

For all visa requirements, we recommend checking the IRCC visa information pages on their website, where you can also find the PTE Core to CLB conversion table.

How to find your language level based on your test results?

Work in Canada after you graduate: As of November 1, 2024, most post-graduation work permit (PGWP) applicants are required to meet minimum levels of language ability to be eligible for a PGWP. For more details Click here.
