Course Code: SCH4U
Course Type: University Preparation
Delivery Options Available: Online / In Class ( You can only choose one )
Prerequisite: Grade 11 Chemistry, University Preparation
$499.00
All course prices are in CAD – Canadian Dollars
This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of organic chemistry, the structure and properties of matter, energy changes and rates of reaction, equilibrium in chemical systems, and electrochemistry. Students will further develop their problem-solving and investigation skills as they investigate chemical processes, and will refine their ability to communicate scientific information. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of chemistry in everyday life and on evaluating the impact of chemical technology on the environment.
Below is the suggested sequence of course unit delivery as well as the recommended number of hours to complete the respective unit. Please note that while the unit called “Scientific Investigation Skills and Career Exploration” is not listed below, however the specific expectations listed in this unit are threaded and incorporated within the delivery and assessment of the other five units. For complete details of targeted expectations within each unit and activity, please see each Unit Overview found in the SCH4U course profile.
| Unit | Title | Expectations Summary | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Organic Chemistry | Students study the structure, properties, and chemical behaviour of organic compounds. They investigate organic reactions, represent compounds in different ways, and assess the social and environmental impact of organic compounds used in everyday life. | 24 Hours |
| 2 | Structure and Properties of Matter | Students explore atomic structure, chemical bonding, molecular shapes, and physical properties of matter. They connect bonding and structure to the properties of ionic, molecular, covalent network, and metallic substances. | 22 Hours |
| 3 | Energy Changes and Rates of Reactions | Students investigate energy changes and reaction rates in physical and chemical processes. They solve related problems and evaluate technologies and chemical processes based on efficiency and environmental impact. | 22 Hours |
| 4 | Chemical Systems and Equilibrium | Students examine dynamic equilibrium and the variables that shift chemical systems. They investigate qualitative and quantitative equilibrium problems and assess equilibrium processes in biological, biochemical, and technological systems. | 22 Hours |
| 5 | Electrochemistry | Students study oxidation-reduction reactions, galvanic cells, and practical applications of electrochemistry. They analyse electrochemical reactions and evaluate related technologies for society, health and safety, and the environment. | 20 Hours |
| Final | Final Evaluation | Students complete a final exam and culminating activity as a summative evaluation of all course strands. | Included |
| Total | Course Total | Total instructional and evaluation time for SCH4U. | 110 Hours |
SCH4U deepens students’ understanding of chemistry through organic chemistry, structure and properties of matter, energy changes and rates of reaction, chemical equilibrium, and electrochemistry.
Students strengthen problem-solving, investigation, and scientific communication skills as they investigate chemical processes and evaluate the impact of chemical technologies on everyday life and the environment.
Please be aware that, as per Ministry guidelines, CanSTEM Education has a mandatory minimum requirement of 2 weeks enrolment for students to be eligible for a midterm report card and 4 weeks enrolment to be eligible for a final report card. This 110-hour requirement ensures that students receive a standardized amount of learning time for each credit they earn. The 110 hours typically include planned learning activities, excluding homework, designed to achieve the course’s curriculum expectations, according to the Ontario Ministry of Education.
SCH4U is a Grade 12 Chemistry course at a University preparation level.
4U refers to the Grade level of the courses and the pathway. 4 means it is a grade 12 course and U means it is a university preparation course.
Prerequisite: Grade 11 Chemistry, University Preparation
