AP Precalculus is a college-level Advanced Placement course that builds a strong foundation in functions, trigonometry, and math modeling. First, students study polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. In addition, they learn to read graphs, solve problems, and apply math concepts to real-world situations. Students also use algebraic and graphical methods to explore patterns and relationships. Moreover, the course strengthens critical thinking, problem-solving, and math communication skills. As a result, students prepare for the AP Precalculus Exam and build a strong foundation for future studies in calculus, engineering, computer science, economics, and other STEM fields.
| Unit | Title | Expectations Summary | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Polynomial and Rational Functions | First, students study rates of change, zeros, end behavior, asymptotes, holes, transformations, and models using polynomial and rational functions. | Function Analysis |
| 2 | Exponential and Logarithmic Functions | Next, students build exponential and logarithmic models, solve equations, study inverse relationships, and evaluate regression models. | Growth Models |
| 3 | Trigonometric and Polar Functions | In addition, students explore periodic patterns, trigonometric functions, inverse functions, equations, polar coordinates, and polar graphs. | Trigonometry |
| 4 | Functions Involving Parameters, Vectors, and Matrices | Then, students extend their study of functions through parametric functions, planar motion, conic sections, vectors, matrices, transformations, and real-world models. | Extended Modeling |
| Final | AP Precalculus Modeling Project and Review | Finally, students complete a modeling project using numerical, graphical, and written evidence. As a result, they strengthen their skills for AP-style multiple-choice and free-response questions. | AP Preparation |
AP Precalculus is a college-level mathematics course that explores functions, trigonometry, and mathematical modeling. It prepares students for college mathematics, STEM programs, and the AP Precalculus Exam.
AP Precalculus is ideal for students who have completed Algebra 2 and Geometry and want to strengthen their mathematical skills before taking calculus. It is especially beneficial for students planning to study STEM, business, economics, or data science.
Students develop skills in mathematical reasoning, function analysis, problem-solving, and modeling real-world situations. They also learn to interpret and communicate mathematical ideas using graphs, equations, tables, and verbal explanations.
Students should have completed introductory algebra and geometry and be comfortable working with equations, functions, and basic trigonometric concepts.
AP Precalculus is typically completed over one academic year. The course prepares students for the AP Precalculus Exam and provides a strong foundation for future calculus courses.
