AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism is a calculus-based Advanced Placement course that explores electricity and magnetism at the college level. Students study electric charges, electric fields, circuits, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, and Maxwell’s equations. In addition, they use calculus and mathematical models to solve physics problems. Moreover, students complete lab activities, analyze data, and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Throughout the course, they strengthen their math, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving skills. As a result, students prepare for the AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism Exam and build a strong foundation for future studies in physics, engineering, and other STEM fields.
| Unit | Title | Expectations Summary | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | Electric Charges, Fields, and Gauss's Law | First, students study Coulomb's law, electric fields, electric flux, symmetry, and Gauss's law. | Electric Fields |
| 9 | Electric Potential | Next, students calculate electric potential for different charge systems. In addition, they apply energy conservation to charged systems. | Electric Energy |
| 10 | Conductors and Capacitors | Then, students study conductors, capacitance, energy storage, dielectrics, and combinations of capacitors. | Capacitance |
| 11 | Electric Circuits | In addition, students study current, resistance, power, Kirchhoff's rules, batteries, resistors, and direct-current circuits. | Circuits |
| 12 | Magnetic Fields and Electromagnetism | After that, students explore magnetic forces, magnetic fields, the Biot-Savart law, and Ampere's law. | Magnetism |
| 13 | Electromagnetic Induction | Furthermore, students study magnetic flux, Faraday's law, Lenz's law, induced emf, inductance, and LR circuits. | Induction |
| Labs | AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism Laboratory Investigations | Finally, students plan experiments involving electric and magnetic fields, circuits, and induction. They also analyze data and test physics models. | Scientific Practices |
