The course content outlined below is organized into commonly taught units of study that provide one possible sequence for the course. Your teacher may choose to organize the course content differently based on local priorities and preferences.
Algebra-Based is a rigorous, full-year Advanced Placement course equivalent to a second-semester, algebra-based college physics class. Students explore thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, fluids, optics, and modern physics through inquiry-based investigations, mathematical modeling, and laboratory experiments, developing a deeper understanding of advanced physical principles and their real-world applications.
Students strengthen their scientific reasoning and analytical skills by designing experiments, interpreting data, and solving complex physics problems. The course emphasizes critical thinking, evidence-based analysis, and experimental inquiry while preparing students for success on the AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based Exam and future studies in science, engineering, and other STEM disciplines.

AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based is a second-semester, algebra-based college-level physics course that explores thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, fluids, optics, and modern physics through inquiry-based learning and laboratory investigations.
AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based is ideal for students interested in science, engineering, medicine, or other STEM fields who want to deepen their understanding of advanced physics concepts.
Students build scientific reasoning, experimental design, mathematical problem-solving, data analysis, and critical thinking skills through hands-on investigations and real-world physics applications.
The College Board recommends completing AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based (or an equivalent introductory physics course) and taking Precalculus or an equivalent mathematics course before enrolling.
AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based is typically completed over one academic year, with students preparing throughout the course for the AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based Exam.
