AP Computer Science A is a college-level Advanced Placement course that introduces students to programming with Java. Students learn to design programs, organize code, work with data, and solve problems. In addition, they develop skills with variables, methods, classes, objects, and arrays. Students also create programs, test solutions, find errors, and improve their code. Throughout the course, practical coding activities help students strengthen their logical thinking and problem-solving skills. As a result, students prepare for the AP Computer Science A Exam and build a strong foundation for future studies in computer science, software development, engineering, and related technology fields.
| Unit | Title | Expectations Summary | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Using Objects and Methods | Students use basic Java data types, variables, expressions, classes, objects, constructors, methods, strings, APIs, and libraries to build foundational Java programs. | Java Foundations |
| 2 | Selection and Iteration | Students develop algorithms with Boolean expressions, conditional statements, loops, nested iteration, string processing, and informal analysis of program efficiency. | Algorithms and Control |
| 3 | Class Creation | Students design classes with attributes, constructors, access control, void and non-void methods, static methods, encapsulation, and decomposition into reusable subproblems. | Object-Oriented Design |
| 4 | Data Collections | Students process arrays, ArrayList objects, and two-dimensional arrays; implement traversal, searching, sorting, and recursion; and consider ethical issues involving data and intellectual property. | Data Structures |
| Labs | Programming Labs and Projects | Students complete the approved outline's Java labs and mini-projects through program design, implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, and written explanation. | Applied Programming |
AP Computer Science A is a college-level programming course that focuses on Java. In particular, students learn programming concepts, object-oriented programming, algorithms, and problem-solving. In addition, the course helps students develop coding and computational thinking skills while preparing for the AP Computer Science A Exam.
AP Computer Science A is a good choice for students interested in computer science, programming, and technology. For example, the course can benefit students who plan to study computer science, software development, engineering, data science, or other technology-related fields.
Students develop strong Java programming, problem-solving, logical thinking, and computational thinking skills. For example, they learn to design programs, work with classes and objects, use arrays, develop algorithms, test code, and fix programming errors. Furthermore, these skills help students approach programming problems in a structured way.
Prior high school coursework in English and algebra is recommended. Students should also be familiar with functions and function notation.
Students usually complete the course over one academic year. As a result, they have time to develop their Java programming skills, practise problem-solving, and prepare for the AP Computer Science A Exam.
