Ontario Updates Secondary School Graduation
Preparing Students for a Brighter Future
At CanSTEM Education Private School, we’re excited to share that Ontario’s education system is undergoing a significant transformation. For the first time in 25 years, the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) requirements are being updated. These changes focus on practical skills and returning to the basics, with the goal of better preparing students for life after high school.
Important Updates and New Requirements
1. Financial Literacy Graduation Requirement
2. Modernized Home Economics Education
Ontario is revitalizing its home economics program by consulting with educators, parents, and employers. The aim is to equip students with essential life skills such as cooking nutritious meals, changing a tire, sewing a button, performing basic first aid, and understanding key economic concepts.
3. Math Proficiency for New Teachers
Starting in February 2025, all new teacher candidates must pass a Math Proficiency Test to be eligible for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers. This initiative ensures that future educators have strong math skills, enabling them to provide students with high-quality math instruction.
4. Revitalized Career Education and Guidance
Ontario is reintroducing career education and guidance programs, after 13 years. These programs will help students understand local job market needs and prepare for successful careers. For the 2024-2025 school year, $14 million will be allocated to support career guidance for students in Grades 9 and 10. The focus will be on STEM and skilled trades opportunities.
5. Return of the Student Exit Survey
The student exit survey will be reintroduced to gather feedback on these updates. This survey will focus on students’ experiences with career education and guidance, which will help the government assess the effectiveness of these changes.
Supporting At-Risk Youth and Justice-Involved Students
Ontario is collaborating with the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services to offer more resources for at-risk youth and students involved in the justice system. These students will receive career coaching and other educational support to help them build brighter futures and contribute positively to their communities.
Improving Guidance Counselor Training
The Ontario College of Teachers is updating its training requirements for guidance counselors. Counselors will receive ongoing professional development to stay informed about labor market trends and new opportunities. This will help them better assist students in finding career options that suit their skills and interests.
Life Skills Education Discussions
This fall, the Ontario government will consult with parents and experts to identify which life skills should be taught in schools. Possible subjects include decision-making, interpersonal skills, and personal accountability—important skills for both personal and professional success.
