IELTS test scores are accepted as proof of English language ability at thousands of universities, colleges and workplaces around the world, and also by immigration authorities in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. IELTS is the English test trusted by more educational organisations, professional associations, and employers across Canada.
You will be offered a choice of different ways to sit your IELTS test at our test centres, and in some cases, remotely online. You can take the test in a test centre, on paper or on computer and Online, at home or any suitable private location.
- When you take an IELTS test you will receive an overall test score from 1–9 on the IELTS scale. You will also receive scores for each of the different sections of the test: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
- The IELTS scores you need will depend on the visa that you are applying for, and the requirements set by the organisation where you have applied to work or study.
- Find out what score is required for each of the Canadian visa types and search for your organisation’s test score requirements with our tool.
We recommend that IELTS test results are considered valid for two years after a test has been taken. This is based on research into second-language loss. Organisations that accept IELTS can choose to accept results for a longer period, so you should check with them directly.
If you didn’t get the desired score you need, you can book to take another test in 14 days from the time you have received the scores from your last test. You can retake the test anytime within the same month. Alternatively, you can also retake one skill within 60 days of your original test.
IELTS One Skill Retake is a new way to help you reach your potential and showcase your full English language ability. With IELTS One Skill Retake, you now have the option to retake any one section of the test (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) if you need to improve on one area (instead of retaking all four sections). We know most people get the scores they need first time, but if you feel you have not performed to your best in all areas, IELTS One Skill Retake can be that help to get you back on track. It is available for both IELTS Academic and General Training tests.
You can take One Skill Retake if you meet all of these requirements:
- You have completed a full test at a centre that offers IELTS One Skill Retake
- Your full test was an IELTS on computer test
- You sit your IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days of your full IELTS test.
Prices will vary, so please contact your local test centre for more information.
You can retake any one section of the IELTS test, whether it is Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking. The format and timing of that IELTS One Skill Retake test is the same as that individual skill in a full IELTS test, only you can save time by not needing to complete the other three skills.
We recommend that IELTS test results are considered valid for two years after a test has been taken. This is based on research into second-language loss. Organisations that accept IELTS can choose to accept results for a longer period, so you should check with them directly.
