Consider your child’s needs

What type of environment will help your child learn and succeed the most? Some children thrive in a structured environment while others do not and some children learn better by listening while others prefer to participate in the lesson. Every child is unique and each parent knows the strengths and weaknesses that apply to them and you need to select a school that can accommodate those needs. Gather as much information as you can about the schools you’re considering

Do not be afraid to make phone calls, speak to other parents and to research written material and reports to get all of the information you need to help with your decision. Attend school fairs and open houses and check the schools’ website for the most reliable and accurate information. Find out about their curriculum, their approach to learning, behaviour policy, safety and the schools’ policies and services, including after-school programs. Gathering information may be time-consuming but it’s necessary because the more you know, the easier it will be to find the right school.

Visit the schools

This will allow you to observe the facility and to get a realistic sense of how the school operates. Make an appointment by contacting the schools you are interested in and you will be able to tour the building and even listen to what teachers say about working there. Keep in mind that teachers will be those closest to your child, so you need to know that they are dedicated and prepared so that you have peace of mind when your child is in their care. Attending an open house will help you observe the attitudes of the staff and students and other parents while getting an understanding of the culture and reputation and how the school is regarded in the community.
